One of the BEST in VIDEO

Like high-level athletes, most successful gamers use mental coaching to optimize their performance.

In every discipline, mental skills make a strong contribution to success. But in some sports, physical or technical abilities have a greater impact on the performance compared to mental skills. A basketball player could have the mental strength of a Jedi Master, he will probably lose a one-on-one game against an average player, if he is tall as Yoda Master. Things are different in E-sport where mental competence has considerable consequences on the result:

Focus

Many video games required high multi-tasking skills, over games that last several hours. Learning to manage the level of concentration is a golden key for a gamer.

Motivation

Gamers in Korea are training from 1pm to 5am. The high volume of practice has provoked cases of burnout and should be strictly avoided for obvious health reasons.

Intense training, strong competition to succeed and unstable financial income, affect the motivation of gamers. Working to maintain a good motivation level through the years is an important aspect of their wellbeing.

TEAM BUILDING

Many video games are team games. Therefore, enhancing fast, clear and smooth communication, is extremely beneficial for the team. This will be also profitable for cohesion and team spirit, to face the most challenging situation.

EMOTIONAL CONTROL

When there are massive events such as the 2014 League of Legend final (Seoul) with 45.000 spectators, gamers need to know how to handle pressure.

The anxiety caused by important competition have different effects on everyone. For some people, it will enhance their performance, while for others, it will prevent them to get into "the zone".

High-level athletes prepared themselves to deal with the stress of big-events through consistent mental training. In E-sport, where mental abilities are even more important, this aspect is an essential to success. Being able to cope stress with mental techniques allow focussing deeper into the game.

Self Confidence

Most of the games require good reactivity skills. A lack of self-confidence can cause a really short span of time during which, the gamer doubts. This brief moment can make the difference between victory and defeat.

An appropriate level of self-confidence will lead to great initiatives, that is fundamental to the team.

TIPS

Computer users such as gamers and office workers can develop many health problems as visual fatigue, headaches, upper limb musculoskeletal injuries and back pain. To prevent this:

✓ Make sure that your body posture is good and your seat is well set:

- Feet flat on the floor

- Elbow angle is straight or slightly obtuse

- Forearms are close to the body

- Hand placed on the extension of the forearm

- Back is straight or slightly back, and supported by the backrest

- Adjustable backrest and armrests

Distance screen-eyes = Length of the arm from the sitting position

✓ Stay hydrated:

- Blink

- Drink water regularly

- Eat food that helps you stay hydrated as fruits & veg (mostly green)

- Use an app that adjusts the display's color to the time (Mac/Windows)

- Switch to E-ink devices (E-reader) if you need to read something long

✓ Do regular breaks :

- 1 break every 45mn

- Look something else than screens

- Get up and go outside to take some fresh air and/or stretch yourself

- Look far to relax your eyes

✓ Strengthen your back muscles:

- Back extension, pull-ups, core exercises

- Yoga (child pose, cat, bridge, wheel, cobra...)
